Interview with Patricia Churchland

So a week and a half ago, our staff writer Stephan had a chance to interview Dr. Patricia Churchland, after a talk she gave at the Montreal Neurological Institute. Dr. Churchland is Professor Emerita of Philosophy at UCSD (having been chair of the department from 2000 until 2007), as well as an adjunct Professor at the Salk Institute. She is probably best known for her work on eliminative materialism and the interface between neuroscience and philosophy — most notably, perhaps, within the pages of the seminal Neurophilosophy (1986). Her more recent books include Braintrust: What Neuroscience Tells us about Morality (2011) and Touching a Nerve (2014), both of which focus on morality and the social brain. She is also former president of the American Philosophical Association and the Society for Philosophy and Psychology, and has received numerous awards, prizes, and honours throughout her distinguished career.

She discussed with us a number of topics, including the evolution and innateness of language, whether language is a module in the brain, the importance of science literacy, and more. You can find the whole thing below here!

Very cool interview!!

Interview with Lisa Pearl

We’re really excited to announce our next interview! Following on our interviews with Steven Pinker and Daniel Dennett, we’re going to be talking with Lisa Pearl.

Lisa is an Associate Professor in the Department of Cognitive Sciences at the University of California, Irvine. Her research is at the intersection of language acquisition and computational modeling, particularly using statistical models and language data to test different theories of how little kids might pick up different aspects of language. She’s also done some research on natural language processing, too!

Lisa’s been doing some of our favourite work on acquisition over the past several years, and we’ve been talking about her work ever since the very first episode of the Ling Space. We’re really happy to get the chance to talk with her and hear what she has to say! As usual, if you have questions for her, just let us know – we’ll ask a couple in the final interview. ^_^

(Also, as a final note: the sale in our store is still going on! Everything, including our new Super Schwa shirt, is 20% off with the code 7500SUBS.)

It was incredibly fun to get to meet Lisa Pearl, and to hear her share her passion and excitement about language and research and BRAINS. I’m really looking forward to putting this interview up on the channel so you can be a part of the fun too!

We’re really excited to have gotten to interview Daniel Dennett recently! Dr. Dennett is a University Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Tufts University, as well as the co-director of their Center for Cognitive Studies. He’s also the author of a number of books on evolution, consciousness, memes, language, and more, including Consciousness Explained, Darwin’s Dangerous Idea, and Intuition Pumps and Other Tools for Thinking.

We got to ask him about a lot of great topics, including:
– the role of language in spreading culture
– what linguists and philosophers can learn from each other
– whether the gap between linguists and the general public is closing
– computers and whether they’ll be able to use language in a human-like way
– a question from one of our followers about whether we have a dedicated mental language

And more! Looking forward to hearing what everyone has to say about it.

Reblog for the day crew! ^_^

Dennett interview is up! It’s so exciting that we had the chance to do this. Thank you again to Dr. Dennett for the opportunity!

Interview with Daniel Dennett

We’re really excited to announce that we’ll be interviewing Daniel Dennett this weekend! Dr. Dennett is a University Professor and the co-director of the Centre for Cognitive Studies at Tufts University. He’s written widely about philosophy of mind and cognitive science, among a wide variety of other issues, and his most recent book is Intuition Pumps and Other Tools for Thinking.

We’re going to be talking to him about the philosophy and evolution of language, links between syntax and semantics, and more! But we wanted to know what you all think. Much like in our interview with Steven Pinker, we want to include some questions from our followers here. So just let us know! ^_^

If anyone has questions they want to ask Daniel Dennett, let @thelingspace know!
